What is a Viva coupling?
Rexnord Viva is a non-lubricated, torsionally flexible elastomeric shaft coupling that transmits torque through a polyurethane element chemically bonded to coated steel shoes. The split two-half element design enables replacement without moving hubs or connected equipment, and the element accommodates angular, axial and radial flexibility. Viva builds on the earlier Omega concept, but its components are not interchangeable with Omega.
Core advantages: two-piece replaceable polyurethane flex element; bonded corrosion-resistant steel shoes; radial access to self-locking capscrews; reversible hubs; no routine coupling lubrication; torsional softness for shock cushioning. The manufacturer describes a stress-relief V-notch and an element that may disconnect under severe overload - it must not be specified as a calibrated torque-limiting device.

Selection Procedure - Manufacturer Catalogue Method
Identify the machine, driver, driven load and duty.
Select V, VS or VSX for shaft gap and maintenance access.
Calculate operating torque: T (N·m) = 9,549 × P (kW) / n (rpm).
Obtain the manufacturer-specific service factor (SF) and any temperature or driver corrections.
Calculate Teq = T × SF and choose a catalogue torque rating above Teq.
Verify maximum rpm, shaft bores, hub attachment, shaft gap, allowable misalignment and thermal environment.
Review torsional / lateral dynamics for sensitive or critical systems.

Published Data and Operating Cautions
Viva catalogue size-specific torque, speed, bore, weight and shaft-gap tables vary by V / VS / VSX and hub arrangement. The manufacturer cautions that axial-sensitive equipment may require additional limits; coupling selection alone does not establish system torsional / lateral stability. The manufacturer describes ANSI/AGMA 9000 Class 8 standard balance for factory-matched half elements; high-speed duties require application-specific confirmation.
Replacement / Interchange Checklist
Never approve a replacement from size or visual similarity alone. Compare transmitted and peak torque; motor / driver type; maximum rpm; hub bores and keyways; shaft engagement; DBSE and total length; allowable combined misalignment; axial forces; torsional stiffness and damping; inertia and balance; temperature and chemicals; maintenance accessibility; fastener hardware; machine guarding; and any project standards.
| Classification | Meaning |

| Dimensionally Compatible | Dimensional checks passed, performance still to verify |
| Functionally Equivalent | Different design meeting validated application requirements |
| Engineering Review Required | Insufficient evidence or modifications needed |
Viva vs Omega - important compatibility distinction
Both are split-element elastomeric coupling families from Rexnord, but the Viva catalogue explicitly states that Viva and Omega parts are not interchangeable. Similar shaft-gap layouts or operating principles do not establish interchange of hubs, elastomer elements, fasteners or complete assemblies. See also Omega Elastomeric Couplings.
Industrial Applications
Pumps, centrifugal fans, blowers, compressors, conveyors, bucket elevators, mixers, crushers, mineral processing, cement production, steel production, paper processing and general OEM drives. Final suitability depends on each duty cycle, motor characteristics and manufacturer limits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the element be replaced without moving machinery?
The split-half construction is intended to simplify replacement, subject to safe access.
Does this coupling need oil or grease?
The flexible coupling element is non-lubricated; connected machinery may require separate lubrication.
Are Omega and Viva components interchangeable?
No; the Viva catalogue explicitly rules this out.
Is the Viva element a torque limiter?
No. The element may disconnect under severe overload, but it must not be specified as a calibrated torque-limiting device.
