Linear Motion Systems & Industrial Actuators

Engineering-led discovery, selection, sourcing and replacement support for linear guides, screw drives, actuators and positioning axes - for industrial OEMs and maintenance teams.

Reference Product Families

What is a linear guide?

A linear guide enables a load to translate along a defined axis while resisting forces and moments. Profiled-rail guides use rolling balls or rollers between a rail and carriage; round-shaft systems use bushings on hardened shafts. The guide constrains motion but does not by itself propel the axis.

How do linear motion drives work?

Ball screws convert rotation into axial motion through recirculating rolling elements. Lead screws use sliding-thread contact. Belt-driven axes translate a carriage using a belt; rack-and-pinion drives use tooth engagement for long travel. Electromechanical cylinders use motor-driven screw mechanisms to deliver axial thrust. Each option has different stiffness, backlash, efficiency and safety characteristics.

Product Families

  • Profiled rail guides (ball and roller)
  • Round-shaft guides and linear bushings
  • Ball, lead / trapezoidal and specialist roller screws
  • Electric linear actuators and electromechanical cylinders
  • Rack-and-pinion linear drives
  • Linear modules, gantry / XYZ positioning systems
  • Ball splines, crossed-roller guides and telescopic slides

Engineering Selection Method

Define stroke, axis orientation, speed, acceleration, repeatability, duty cycle, applied load, moments, shock and environment. Select the guidance architecture; validate static / dynamic ratings, life, preload and lubrication using the manufacturer catalogue. For screw drives check lead, efficiency, critical speed, buckling, support bearings and motor torque. For powered axes verify encoder, limit switches, brakes and controls. Obtain dimensional drawings and approval before procurement.

Basic Engineering Checks

Ideal screw travel speed: v = p × n, where p is the lead in mm/rev and n the screw speed in rpm; v is in mm/min. Use the actual speed after gearing. Motor torque must account for thrust, efficiency, acceleration and losses. Guide pitch / yaw / roll moment ratings, screw buckling, thermal growth and vibration require separate validation.

Replacement & Interchange

Compare mounting envelope, hole pattern, rail / carriage geometry, screw diameter / lead, nut flange, end machining, shaft fits, static / dynamic load ratings, moment capacity, stiffness, preload, accuracy, backlash, friction, speed, life, lubrication, seals, motor and control interfaces, and environmental suitability.
