When is a rack and pinion drive used?
Rack and pinion drives are used where travel is long or must be extended by joining rack sections, and where high feed force and speed are required. Accuracy depends on rack quality, mounting and backlash control (for example split or preloaded pinions). The drive is sized from feed force, acceleration, speed and the pinion / gearbox combination.
