A zero-backlash coupling connects two shafts without rotational play between the driving and driven side, so that angular position is transmitted without lost motion. Typical designs include bellows couplings, metal disc (lamina) couplings, preloaded elastomer jaw couplings, beam couplings and other precision designs, each with different torsional stiffness, damping, misalignment and speed characteristics.
They are used where positioning accuracy and repeatability matter, for example on servo drives, ball screws, linear axes, encoders, machine tools, packaging and automation equipment.
Backlash-free behaviour, torsional stiffness and permissible misalignment are design- and size-specific and must be verified against the selected manufacturer's current data and the actual application.
