Request a Quote →What is a belt drive calculation?
A belt drive calculation turns operating data - power, speeds, duty and space - into a complete drive specification: belt type, section or profile, pulley sizes, belt length, centre distance, number of belts or belt width, and the installation tension.
A correct calculation avoids oversized or undersized drives, short belt life, slip, noise and bearing overload, and allows the most compact and economical solution to be chosen.
Key Formulas
| Quantity | Formula | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Speed ratio | i = n1 / n2 = D / d (timing: z2 / z1) | D, d = pitch (datum) diameters; z = tooth counts. |
| Torque | T (Nm) = 9549 x P (kW) / n (rpm) | At the shaft considered. |
| Design power | Pd = P x service factor | Service factor from the belt manufacturer for the driver, driven machine and hours. |
| Belt speed | v (m/s) = d (mm) x n (rpm) / 19100 | Check against belt and pulley material limits. |
| Belt length (open drive) | L = 2C + pi (D + d) / 2 + (D - d)^2 / 4C | C = centre distance; choose the nearest standard length and recalculate C. |
| Arc of contact (small pulley) | beta = 180 - 57 (D - d) / C [degrees] | Used for the arc-of-contact correction factor. |
| Number of V-belts | z = Pd / (P1 x c1 x c2) | P1 = rated power per belt; c1, c2 = arc and length factors. |
| Span tension by frequency | T = 4 x M x Lf^2 x f^2 | Checked with a belt tension meter. |
Power ratings, service factors and correction factors are taken from the selected belt manufacturer's current data.
Calculation Procedure
Collect operating data
Power, driver and driven speeds, duty, start/stop, shock, hours per day and environment.
Choose the belt system
V-belt, timing belt or polyurethane belt - by synchronisation, efficiency, maintenance and cost.
Determine design power and section
Apply the service factor and select the section or profile from the manufacturer's chart.
Select pulleys
Diameters or tooth counts for the ratio, above the minimum size, within the available space.
Belt length and centre distance
Standard belt length and the resulting centre distance with adjustment allowance.
Number of belts or width
With arc-of-contact, length and teeth-in-mesh corrections.
Configuration
Bores or taper bushes, flanges, tensioning (motor base or tensioner), guards, alignment and installation tension.
Deliverable
Drive datasheet with belt and pulley part numbers, bores, tension and installation notes, plus RFQ.

Request a belt drive calculation
Send the operating data or the existing drive details. MECHATRIC returns a configured drive with matching belts and pulleys.
Formulas are general engineering relations for open two-pulley drives. Final selection uses the current data of the selected belt and pulley manufacturer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What data do I need for a belt drive calculation?
Power, driver and driven speeds, duty and the available space; for an existing drive, the belt markings and pulley sizes.
Can a V-belt drive be converted to a timing belt drive?
Often yes, for higher efficiency and less maintenance, but pulleys must be changed and the drive recalculated.
What does the calculation deliver?
A drive specification with belt type and size, pulley sizes and bores, centre distance, number of belts or width, and installation tension.
