Bearings

Ball and roller bearings - engineering selection, replacement, equivalents and RFQ.

Industrial Rolling Bearings

Ball and roller bearings for motors, gearboxes, conveyors, fans, pumps, crushers and heavy machinery - engineering selection, cross-reference review, replacement and RFQ support.

Reference Bearing Families

What is a rolling bearing?

Rolling bearings support rotating or oscillating shafts while transmitting forces between machine components. Ball bearings have approximately point contact and generally favour lower friction and higher speeds; roller bearings use line contact and generally provide greater load capacity at comparable envelope dimensions. Radial and thrust bearings are distinguished by the predominant load direction.

Bearing Types and Engineering Applications

Bearing typeTypical ISO designation exampleEngineering use
Deep groove ball bearing6205Versatile radial loads with axial capability in both directions.
Angular contact ball bearing7205 BCombined loads and axial location, often arranged in pairs.
Self-aligning ball bearing1205Tolerates angular misalignment.
Cylindrical roller bearingNU 205, N 205High radial capacity; NU and N arrangements commonly allow axial displacement.
Tapered roller bearing30205Combined loads and adjustable arrangements.
Spherical roller bearing22205Heavy radial loads, axial capability and misalignment.
Needle roller bearingNA 4905High radial capacity with compact radial section.
CARB toroidal roller bearing (SKF)C 2205Radial loads with angular misalignment and internal axial displacement.
Thrust ball / thrust roller bearing51105, 29412Predominantly axial loading.

Designation examples follow common ISO dimension-series numbering for illustration; the complete designation including prefixes and suffixes must be confirmed for each manufacturer.

Engineering Selection Method

Define shaft diameter and available envelope, radial and axial loads (including transients), rotational speed, duty cycle, required service life, temperature, alignment, shaft/housing rigidity and contamination. Compare bearing family, load ratings, equivalent dynamic load and life, limiting/reference speeds, permissible misalignment, internal clearance/preload, fits and sealing. Confirm a final designation against the manufacturer's current product data and operating limits.

Bearing Life and Reliability

Basic rating life L10 = (C / P)p describes a statistical fatigue-life benchmark, not a guaranteed field lifetime; the exponent p is 3 for ball bearings and 10/3 for roller bearings. Actual service life depends strongly on lubrication film, cleanliness, mounting, temperature, load distribution, vibration and other application factors. Modified rating-life calculations and arrangement checks are used for demanding machinery.

Fits, Clearance and Precision

A bearing designation alone is insufficient for interchange. Verify bore, outside diameter, width, chamfers, internal design, cage, accuracy class, radial internal clearance, heat treatment and any sealing arrangement. Interference fits, thermal gradients and shaft/housing deformation alter operating clearance. C3 denotes greater-than-normal radial clearance; it is not automatically an upgrade. Review shaft and housing tolerances in relation to load rotation and assembly method.

Seals, Shields and Lubrication

Metal shields generally form a non-contact gap with the inner ring and suit relatively clean conditions and low friction. Contact seals improve exclusion of moisture and contaminants but can increase frictional torque and temperature; low-friction and non-contact seals offer intermediate solutions. Grease is practical for many sealed-for-life and relubricated bearings; oil bath, circulating oil and other systems may be preferred for thermal management or high-speed duty. Select lubricant viscosity, quantity and replenishment interval for the actual operating conditions.

Industrial Applications

MachineTypical bearing approach
Electric motorsDeep groove ball bearings and, where necessary, electrically insulated solutions.
GearboxesCylindrical, tapered and angular contact designs depending on shaft forces and axial location.
Conveyors and fansSpherical roller bearings for heavy duty and potential misalignment.
Crushers and cement machineryRobust arrangements with carefully designed contamination exclusion and lubrication.
PumpsBearing arrangement and axial thrust checked alongside operating speed and seal environment.
Vertical roller mills and heavy machineryApplication-specific calculations rather than a generic type recommendation.

Bearing Replacement and Equivalence

Start with the complete existing bearing designation, manufacturer, photos and equipment tag. Compare all dimensions and suffixes, including cage, internal clearance, seal/shield, tolerance and lubrication. Validate dynamic/static ratings, axial capacity, speed, operating temperature, mounting interfaces and duty. A nominally matching ISO envelope does not establish full functional equivalence. MECHATRIC coordinates technical clarification, replacement screening and RFQ preparation; availability and brand status are confirmed separately for each enquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ball and roller bearings?

Primarily contact geometry, load capacity and speed behaviour.

What is the difference between 2Z and 2RS?

Typically metal shields versus elastomeric seals, but suffix interpretation must be checked for the exact brand and design.

Can a C3 bearing replace CN?

Only after verifying operating clearance requirements.

Can one brand replace another?

Only after dimensional and functional checks, not designation similarity alone.
